What Behavior Consulting Is
Behavior consulting focuses on concerns that go beyond basic obedience or everyday manners training.
These behaviors are usually more complex than common training issues like jumping, chewing, digging, mouthing, nipping, or rough play. Those problems can often improve with structure, consistency, management, and basic obedience training.
Behavior consulting is for dogs dealing with concerns that may involve fear, anxiety, reactivity, aggression, guarding, stranger danger, separation-related issues, or a dog who is struggling to cope with certain people, places, situations, or routines.
These cases usually need a closer look at what is driving the behavior, not just what the behavior looks like on the surface. The goal is to understand what is contributing to the problem and build a plan that improves safety, communication, management, and long-term behavior change.
If your dog is chewing up the furniture, digging up the backyard, jumping on guests, or struggling with basic manners, head over to the Obedience page.
What’s Behind the Behavior
Behavior problems usually do not come from one single thing. Most of the time, there are a few pieces working together before the behavior gets bad enough that owners start looking for help.
A dog’s genetics, temperament, past experiences, daily routine, stress level, and environment can all play a role. Some dogs are naturally more sensitive, cautious, reactive, or easily overwhelmed than others.
Fear, anxiety, frustration, excitement, or repeated stress can also affect how a dog responds to people, dogs, sounds, movement, handling, or changes in the home. That is why behavior consulting looks at more than the behavior you see on the surface. The goal is to figure out what may be feeding the problem and build a realistic plan that helps your dog and makes things easier to manage at home.
Behaviors Coach Wags Works With
These behaviors can make daily life harder. Walks become stressful, visitors feel uncomfortable, and owners start planning around the behavior. Behavior consulting helps sort through what may be contributing to the problem so we can build a safer, more realistic plan moving forward.
Behavior consulting may be a good fit for dogs struggling with:
- Reactivity toward dogs, people, or the environment
- Resource guarding
- Stranger danger or visitor issues
- Aggression toward dogs or people
- Conflict between dogs or other pets in the home
- Handling sensitivity
Some cases are mild, while others may be more serious or have been building over time. The goal is not just to suppress the behavior, but to better understand what is driving it and create a safer, more manageable path forward for both the dog and owner.

How the Process Works
Behavior consulting starts with an initial consultation where we take a closer look at your dog, the behavior concerns you are dealing with, and the situations where the behavior is most likely to happen.
During the consultation, we discuss your dog’s history, daily routine, environment, triggers, and what has already been tried. Depending on the situation, we may also look at management strategies, handling skills, home setups, safety concerns, and ways to help prevent the behavior from continuing to be rehearsed.
From there, we build a plan based on your dog and your household. Some dogs may need a few follow-up sessions, while others may need longer-term support depending on the severity of the behavior and the goals involved.
Behavior change takes time, consistency, and realistic expectations. The goal is not just short-term improvement, but helping owners better understand their dog while building safer and more manageable routines moving forward.
